The Complicit Eye, Kukuli Velarde’s first major show in Philadelphia of paintings and sculptures, deconstructs ideals of female beauty from colonization to the local barrio. A 2015 Guggenheim fellow, Velarde’s show will feature work that interrogate the construction and consumption of beauty in Western culture, with self-portraits that depicts her as “the other”– a woman, an immigrant, or simply a middle-aged body and sculptures that flip the male gaze. The show also showcases her performance drawings, a free hand mural she will work on for 10 days of the show.
