Meet the Author on Zoom: Concha Alborg
September 12, 2020 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Taller is proud to bring back Concha Alborg on her new memoir, My Mother, That Stranger. Letters from the Spanish Civil War. Her book is based on the discovery of 800 long-lost letters between her parents during the Spanish Civil War.
This unique memoir is a microhistory of the Spanish Civil War at an individual level. Of primary relevance is that Dr. Alborg’s mother lived in Valencia, which in November 1936 become the official capital of the Republican government. There she had an insider’s view of the political and military situation that informed her description of the contrasting burdens of family life in Valencia and the life of her fiancé soldier on the front lines. She is truly an archetype of the women who grew up under the liberal Second Spanish Republic (1931–39), only to be silenced during Franco’s repressive dictatorship (1939-75).
This family memoir is also an immigrant’s story, since the author’s family moved from Spain to the United States, where the author still resides. More than any other event in her life, this move defines who she is: an immigrant living between two cultures. She may seem Americanized to her Spanish relatives, but she is from another country as far as her two daughters are concerned. Although Concha fits well enough in both cultures, a tell-tale Spanish accent marks her speech as well as her writing.
The book is on sale for $32.95 until September 12, shipping, and handling not included. The regular price is $34.95.
