POINTS OF VIEW SPEAKER SERIES: WITH KUKULI VELARDE
February 9 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Kukuli Velarde uses art to examine how we construct ideas of female beauty from colonization to the local barrio, to expose connections between beauty and violence, and to critique the systems of power that marginalize women of color. In conversation with Curator of Contemporary Art Jodi Throckmorton, Velarde will discuss her career and her first solo show of paintings in the United States, The Complicit Eye, on view at Taller Puertorriqueño this winter. Like Rina Banerjee, Velarde deconstructs art history to comment on women’s experiences in a patriarchal world and the challenges of making art in diasporic and immigrant communities. Presented in collaboration with Taller Puertorriqueño.
