In the 1940s\, with the construction of a naval base and a bombing range\, Puerto Rico became a major geo-political military outpost for the United States. For a power claiming global leadership in a decolonizing world\, however\, the archipelago’s colonial condition underscored the dissonance between American democratic rhetoric and its imperial reality. The solution was a deal that\, in 1952\, gave Puerto Rico a degree of self-government without changing its legal status as an “unincorporated” US territory. The US then publicly claimed Puerto Rico was now more autonomous while using repressive tactics such as FBI surveillance\, arrests\, destabilization\, and other methods developed in Washington to silence activists and political parties pushing for full independence. \n\n\n\nIn Cold War Puerto Rico\, Steve Howell examines how J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI targeted Puerto Rican communists as part of an offensive against pro-independence parties and activists generally. Howell’s US-born father\, who fell afoul of Hoover for producing radical cartoons while working in San Juan in the 1940s\, remained on the FBI’s watch list long after exiling himself in Britain. His close friends\, the Puerto Rican author César Andreu Iglesias and Jane Speed de Andreu\, were meanwhile arrested and imprisoned three times during the 1950s. Drawing on a wealth of new sources\, including interviews and FBI files\, Howell tells their stories along with those of other activists who battled indictment in 1954 under the Smith Act\, challenged the jurisdiction of the House Un-American Activities Committee in San Juan in 1959\, and revived the Puerto Rican independence movement in the 1960s\, despite the FBI deploying the covert tactics of COINTELPRO against them. \n\n\n\nPuerto Rico is virtually invisible in histories of what is generally called McCarthyism\, yet anti-communist repression was in many ways more intense there than in the mainland US. Now\, with Puerto Rico’s future currently hanging in the balance\, Howell’s compelling history demonstrates why we need to understand the long enforcement of its colonial status.

A non for profit dance and drum organization preserving\, advocating and educating in Puerto Rican Bomba and its connection to the African Diaspora. As a dancer/choreograpger she has graced the stages of Lincoln center out of Doors\, City Center\, Teatro La Perla in Ponce\, PR\, Teatro SEA\, Pregones Theater\, BAAD\, Bronx Museum\, Congo Square\, New Orleans\, Teatro Heredia in Santiago de Cuba and Chiapas \,Mexico. She protrayed Josephine Baker for Macys Herald Square\, danced at the Latin Billboards as a featured dancer for Latin sensation Don Omar and was featured in Univision commercial: “Herencia Puertorriquena.” Milteri has won numerous awards for her innovative and thoughful choreography.

She uses classic literature and cocktail recipes to organize and populate bits and pieces of a life: growing up as a Mexican middle-class girl in a predominantly white suburb where neighbors labeled her family the “dirty” Mexicans; being bullied by an older sister on car rides from Los Angeles to Mexico\, grappling with a father’s gambling addiction\, and\, later\, his death; journeying on the continuous carousel of lovers the Pacific and Atlantic coasts have to offer. A shaken and stirred abecedarian\, a sloppy yet put-together künstlerroman\, about charting one’s life path amid cultural pressures and the grip of the ever-present past\, the book can be read forwards or backwards and\, with any hope\, completely out of sequence so that no reader can read this novel the same way twice.

At age twenty-five\, she married her first love\, a green-eyed musician whose internal storms drove Coral to slowly realize that the marriage must end. Faced with disillusionment—with her husband\, with the patriarchal expectations that surrounded her like the Caribbean Sea\, and with the limited options available to her—she leaves\, only for Hurricane Maria to wrench her heart homeward. \n\n\n\nCoral evokes the beauty\, love\, and language of her family and of Puerto Rico as well as the pain of yearning for more. Tastes\, colors\, and the dreamlike lushness of childhood memories infuse this mournful and propulsive memoir of personal and natural disasters—and the self-discovery made possible only when we choose what to leave behind. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nPatricia Coral is a bilingual Puerto Rican writer. She holds an MFA in creative writing from American University\, where she received the Myra Sklarew Award and where she was Editor in Chief of FOLIO. Coral writes creative nonfiction and poetry\, but frequently her words find their home in between. The former events director for Politics and Prose Bookstore\, she has contributed to numerous literary magazines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Moderator\n\n\n\nAdrienne Perry grew up in Wyoming\, earned her MFA from Warren Wilson College\, and her PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. From 2014-2016 she served as the Editor of Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. A Hedgebrook alumna\, Adrienne is also a Kimbilio Fellow and a member of the Rabble Collective. Adrienne’s writing has received support from Friends of Writers\, the Elizabeth George Foundation\, Inprint\, and the University of Houston. In 2020\, Adrienne received the inaugural Elizabeth Alexander Prize in Creative Writing from Meridians journal. Adrienne’s work has appeared or is forthcoming in Copper Nickel\, Black Warrior Review\, Indiana Review\, Ninth Letter\, and elsewhere. She is an Assistant Professor of literature and creative writing at at Villanova University.

For her part\, high school senior Libertad (Libi) Morazán takes heart in writing political poetry for her anonymous Instagram account and a budding romance with someone new. But things come to a head when Mami sees texts on her phone mentioning a kiss with a girl and Libi discovers her beloved older brother\, Maynor\, playing a major role in the protests. As Libertad faces the political and social corruption around her\, stifling homophobia at home and school\, and ramped up threats to her poetry online\, she begins dreaming of a future in which she doesn’t have to hide who she is or worry about someone she loves losing their life just for speaking up.
