Sing along with a great big familia as they fill up their platos\, play their favorite juegos\, and wait for the three kings and regalitos to arrive. This enchanting celebration of a beloved holiday is brought to life through lively rhyming dual-lingual text by Sheila Colón-Bagley with festive illustrations from Alejandro Mesa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis holiday season\, celebrate with your family—receive a special gift\, engage in a joyous storytime\, partake in arts and crafts\, and meet the Kings and Queens in a celebration that wraps up the holiday season with warmth and cheer! \n\n\n\nMake sure to secure your spot by registering before the deadline. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Betsy Z. Casañas
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with Betsy Z. Casañas as we discuss her new paintings in her show\, Call and Response. In contemporary art’s vibrant and ever-evolving world\, few artists capture the essence of storytelling through the visual medium as compellingly as Betsy Z. Casañas. Known for her intricate Mural designs and profound narratives\, Casañas’ work has captivated audiences and sparked global conversations. This event is free and open to the entire family\, let us know you’re coming by registering below. \n\n\n\nBetsy Z Casañas (b. 1974 in Philadelphia\, PA)\, based in Philadelphia and Puerto Rico\, is a Visual and Public Artist\, an educator\, a community activist\, and an organizer. She is the director of A Seed on Diamond Gallery (closed in 2020) and founder of Semilla Arts LLC\, a grassroots organization that uses art for social change. Casañas has 29 years of experience in the arts and has created over 70 murals worldwide. In 2018\, Casañas was featured in the Robb Report as one of the “5 Women Changing the Face of Street Art Around the Globe”. Her work is known for its use of pattern and color and the dignity and humanity of her depictions of people in marginalized communities. \n\n\n\nCreating safe spaces has been a vital part of her work. As a Latina artist working in communities of color worldwide\, she understands the importance of the people living in these communities seeing themselves reflected in the artwork and the leadership of their places. She believes that artists must reflect on the times they are living in and highlight the people’s stories to change the narrative that has been created for us. By normalizing and humanizing our collective stories\, we create more tolerant communities. \n\n\n\nFull Name *Email Address *How many people are attending with you?Just me1 more person2 more people3 or more peopleRegister

SUMMARY:Book Launch: We Came To Welcome You
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 4\, 7pm \n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 4\, at 7pm for a Q&A and book signing with local author Vincent Tirado in conversation with Diana Rodriguez Wallach. Light refreshments will be provided. A spine-chilling psychological thriller about a multiracial lesbian couple who are thrilled to move into their dream home in a gated community–– until strange things start happening and the pressure to assimilate becomes life or death. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Other Black Girl meets Midsommar in this spine-chilling\, propulsive psychological thriller from highly acclaimed author Vincent Tirado\, about a multiracial lesbian couple who are thrilled to move into their dream home in a gated community–– until strange things start happening and the pressure to assimilate becomes life or death. \n\n\n\nAkin to the social horror of Jordan Peele and Lovecraft County\, We Came to Welcome You cleverly uses the uncanny to illuminate the cultish\, shocking nature of systemic racism. Sol Reyes has had a rough year. After a series of workplace incidents at her university lab culminates in a plagiarism accusation\, Sol is put on probation. Dutiful visits to her homophobic father aren’t helping her mental health\, and she finds her nightly glass of wine becoming more of an all-day—and all-bottle—event. Her wife\, Alice Song\, is far more optimistic. After all\, the two finally managed to buy a house in the beautiful\, gated community of Maneless Grove. But the neighbors are a little too friendly\, in Sol’s opinion. She has no interest in the pushy Homeowners Association\, their bizarrely detailed contract\, or their never-ending microaggressions. But Alice simply attributes their pursuit to the community motto: “Invest in a neighborly spirit\,” which only serves to irritate Sol more. Suddenly\, a number of strange occurrences—doors and stairs disappearing\, roots growing inside the house\, a loud buzzing sound that only Sol can hear—cause Sol to wonder if her social paranoia is built on something more sinister. But Sol’s fears are dismissed as Alice embraces their new home and becomes increasingly worried about Sol’s drinking and manic behavior. When Sol finds a journal on the property from a resident that went missing a few years ago\, she realizes why they were able to buy the house so easily… Through Sol’s razor-sharp tongue and macabre sense of humor\, Tirado explores the very real pressures to assimilate with one’s surroundings to “survive\,” while also asking the question: Is it survival when you’re no longer your true self? Because in Maneless Grove\, either you become a good neighbor—or you die. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVincent Tirado is a nonbinary Afro-Latine Bronx native. They ventured out to Pennsylvania and Ohio to get their bachelor’s degree in biology and master’s degree in bioethics. Their debut YA novel Burn Down\, Rise Up was the 2022 winner of the Pura Belpré Award and was a finalist for the 2022 Stoker Awards and 2023 Lammy Awards. Their sophomore YA novel We Don’t Swim Here was called “a chilling ghost story” by Publishers Weekly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Participants\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiana Rodriguez Wallach is a multi-published author of young adult novels. Her mostrecent\, Small Town Monsters\, is a YA Latinx horror novel that published in September 2021. Her next YA Latinx Horror\, Hatchet Girls\, comes out October 10\, 2023. Bustle listed Diana as one of the “Top Nine Latinx Authors to Read for Women’s History Month.” She is the author of the Anastasia Phoenix Series\, as well as YA contemporary Latina novels and a YA short-story collection. She lives in the Philadelphia area with her husband\, two children\, and two cats.

Miranda Jr.’s personal and political memoir reveals a deep understanding of Latino culture and how to build community to change our world for the better. \n\n\n\nA veteran of New York and national politics\, Luis Miranda embodies the relentless spirit of progress of American immigrants. \n\n\n\nThere is no one on the Latino\, New York\, and national political scene with the breadth of experience\, passion\, and storytelling charm of Luis Miranda. In \n\n\n\nRelentless\, he shares a fascinating narrative of his life and career—from his early days as a radically minded Puerto Rican activist to his decades of political advice and problem-solving. \n\n\n\nMiranda recounts the thrill of the ascendency of Hamilton\, created by his son Lin-Manuel\, and he details the suffering after the devastation of Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria. Amid the triumphs and challenges\, Miranda examines what his experience reveals about our ever-changing politics\, demographics\, and society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuis A. Miranda Jr. arrived in New York City from Puerto Rico in 1974 to study psychology at NYU but soon found himself drawn to community action when he organized his neighbors to fight for better schools for their children. In the 1980s he was a special advisor for Hispanic Affairs to Mayor Ed Koch\, and he continued to serve in key roles for the Dinkins and Giuliani administrations. As a founding partner of the MirRam Group\, Miranda has consulted on several successful political campaigns\, including the senatorial campaigns of Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton\, Senator Chuck Schumer\, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Most recently he managed New York Attorney General Letitia James’ successful reelection. Miranda is the founding president of the Hispanic Federation and is currently the chairperson of the Latino Victory Fund\, the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance\, Viva Broadway\, and the Public Theater. He is a board member of The City\, and former chair of the Center for Latin American\, Caribbean\, and Latino Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Participants\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in Ciales\, Puerto Rico\, Carmen Febo San Miguel graduated as a physician in 1973. She came to Philadelphia to complete her residency\, specializing in Family Medicine\, which she completed in 1976. For four decades she worked as a Family Medicine Specialist providing comprehensive medical care\, and as Medical Director\, in settings that included Germantown Family Medicine Associates and the Naranjito Health Center in Puerto Rico\, (1980 to 1984)\, until she retired from medicine in 2014. This town in the central mountains of Puerto Rico declared her "Hija Adoptiva” (Adoptive Daughter). \n\n\n\n Carmen is mainly recognized for her work with Taller Puertorriqueño\, as its Executive Director since 1999\, while still serving part-time as a physician until retiring from medicine in 2014. Under her leadership\, Taller continued to grow and\, in 2016\, the organization completed and moved into the stunning $11.5 million cultural center in the heart of Philadelphia’s Latino community. In 2019 she was recognized as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania and in 2023 she received the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s Heritage Award for her significant contributions to the heritage future of the Philadelphia region. She currently serves as a member of the Women’s Non-Profit Leadership Initiative\,as a city of Philadelphia Art Commissioner and in Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Exhibitions Committee.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Tiny Threads
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 7 at 7pm \n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us with award-winning author Lilliam Rivera to celebrate the launch of her adult debut\, Tiny Threads. A dark supernatural thriller set in the world of fashion by former fashion journalist and award-winning author Lilliam Rivera. Lilliam will be in conversation with Erica Bernal of LITina Book Club. RSVP and pre-order your book for 25% off! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFashion-obsessed Samara finally has the life she’s always dreamed of: A high-powered job with legendary designer Antonio Mota. A new home in sunny California\, far away from those drab Jersey winters. And an intriguing love interest\, Brandon\, a wealthy investor in Mota’s fashion line. But it’s not long before Samara’s dream life begins to turn into a living nightmare as Mota’s big fashion show approaches and the pressure on her turns crushing. Perhaps that’s why she begins hearing voices in her room at night—and seeing strange things that can’t be explained away by stress or anxiety or the number of drinks she’s been consuming. And it may not be just Samara imagining things as her psyche unravels\, because she soon discovers hints that her new city—and the House of Mota—may be built on a foundation of secrets and lies. Now Samara must uncover what hideous truths lurk in the shadows of this illusory world of glamour and beauty before those shadows claim her. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLilliam Rivera is a MacDowell Fellow and an award-winning author of eight works of fiction: four young adult novels\, three middle grade books\, and a graphic novel for DC Comics. Her books have been awarded a Pura Belpré honor and featured on NPR and in The New Yorker\, the Los Angeles Times\, The New York Times\, and multiple “best of” lists. Her novel Never Look Back is slated for a movie adaptation. A Bronx\, New York\, native\, Lilliam Rivera currently lives in Los Angeles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout LITina Book Club\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErica Bernal is an avid reader who feels passionate about representation and created LITina Book Club; a space where readers can connect with each other and authors to discover new books that tell the many stories in Latine Literature. Each month\, she selects a book and holds meetings which are streamed on Instagram live with authors who wrote the book (past authors have included Quiara Alegria Hudes\, Maria Hinojosa\, Dahlma Llanos Figueroa to name a few). She aims to promote stories as diverse as our culture. By engaging the community in these meetings the club promotes literacy\, reading for leisure\, and a sense of belonging. Members have stated they learned ro advocate for themselves\, use their voice\, and have even been inspired to write their own stories. \n\n\n\nErica has worked with organizations such as Taller Puertorriqueño\, Latin American Book Fair\, and Power Street Theater to host in person events which promote both the book club and Latine spaces for arts and culture. \n\n\n\nShe says often that she has created this space because its “one she needed as a young Boricua who didn’t see herself in the stories she was reading” since the publishing industry does not typically market to the Latine demographic.

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Alexis Duque with Gabriel de Guzman
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 16 at 6:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet reminder on Youtube \n\n\n\n\nFREE VIRTUAL EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us virtually on October 16 at 6:30 PM for a discussion with the artist Alexis Duque on his new work featured in his first solo show at Taller\, Alexis Duque: Los Dueños de Nada. The discussion will cover his process methods and the themes addressed in his work. \n\n\n\nAlexis Duque’s practice is based on research done through observation in his travels and captured in photography. He grounds his investigations on his experiences as a Colombian immigrant to the US\, navigating the complexities of remaining in the country\, making a living\, and gaining permanent status. His new paintings portray the lives of random people and families he has encountered on the streets of Colombia and New York. They are shown working\, “hustling\,” as Duque describes as a means of survival. He also depicts them in their moments of rest and leisure. He says of his new series: \n\n\n\n“Through portraiture and the elongation of some figures\, I seek to bring attention to each character by dignifying their struggle and humanity while referencing their spiritual being. As an immigrant in the USA\, I relate to their lives\, challenges\, and uncertainties\, as well as their joy and resilience.” \n\n\n\nGabriel de Guzman\, Director of Arts and Chief Curator at Wave Hill\, who contributed the catalogue essay “THE DIGNITY OF PEOPLE EVERY DAY” for Duque’s show\, will join us in the talk. Rafael Damast\, the exhibition curator\, will lead the discussion. \n\n\n\nRegister on YouTube Live to get a reminder.
