SUMMARY:Artist Talk Shifting Realities: 12 Artists Finding Place in Uncertain Times
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 22\, 6:30pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More About the Show \n\n\n\n\nFREE EVENT | RSVP BELOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull Name *Email Address *How many people are attending with you?Just me1 more person2 more people3 or more peopleRegister\n\n\n\n\n\nShifting Realities showcases a group of diverse artists whose practices confront our current landscape of political polarization and widespread doubt. Through their work\, these artists navigate paths toward stability and solace for themselves and their communities amid profound societal transformation. \n\n\n\nThis artist conversation is part of the exhibition whose theme asks a fundamental question: What constitutes our shared reality in an era when historical narratives face revision\, factual foundations erode\, and individual identities risk being silenced? \n\n\n\nJoin us at 6:30 p.m. at Taller for a discussion with artists Kukuli Velarde\, Silvana Cardell\, Marta Sánchez\, and Eugenio Salas about their work and the work in the show. The curator\, Rafael Damast\, will moderate the talk. \n\n\n\nAbout The Artists\n\n\n\nKukuli Velarde\n\n\n\nPhiladelphia-based artist Kukuli Velarde is a painter and sculptor. Primarily known for her feminist reinterpretations of Colonial painting and Pre-Columbian sculpture\, Velarde’s work brings together the personal and the political\, zeroing in on the perspectives of the indigenous people’s culture of her native Peru and those cast into the corner of society due to their age or appearance. \n\n\n\nSilvana Cardell\n\n\n\nSilvana Cardell is an Argentine choreographer\, dancer\, and educator known for her daring\, evocative work in contemporary dance theater. Her choreography explores identity and urgent societal issues\, including climate crisis\, forced migration\, and animal exploitation. \n\n\n\nMarta Sánchez\n\n\n\nChicanx artist Marta Sánchez draws profound inspiration from traditional Mexican folk art traditions. Her artistic practice primarily focuses on linocut\, monotype\, and painting with collage on metal. In her work\, she has explored memory\, mental health\, and placemaking. \n\n\n\nEugenio Salas\n\n\n\nEugenio Salas is a Mexican/Canadian artist based in Philadelphia. His practice involves disrupting social roles and dynamics through collaborative process-based projects carried out autonomously and within institutions. The resulting participatory\, performative actions employ sculpture\, media\, print\, live actions\, and cooking.

Firmly rooted in portraiture\, her work envisions a world of radical possibilities where equality and justice are at the center. By focusing on the voices and faces of marginalized communities\, Symone uses her art to uplift and amplify those who are often overlooked. \n\n\n\nLinette Messina Martinez\n\n\n\nLinette Messina Martinez is a photographer and textile artist. For years\, she has been creating yarn art on Philadelphia streets. Her work beautifies\, celebrates\, and connects people to their neighborhoods. Her monumental work for the exhibition Threads of Sicilian Passage looked at a loss\, the death of someone special\, and the change in family structure as an opportunity for rebirth. \n\n\n\nKalila Jones\n\n\n\nKalila Jones is a multidisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia\, PA\, whose art explores the intersections of their identity through material exploration. She uses yarn\, found textiles\, hair accessories\, and dollar store craft supplies to make collaged textile garments and sculptures that evoke joy and nostalgia. Their use of material helps them navigate what it means to express a sense of unapologetic self in a society that often presents race & gender as monolithic experiences.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk Shifting Realities: 12 Artists Finding Place in Uncertain Times
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 15\, 6:30pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. \n\n\n\nJoin us at 6:30pm at Taller for a discussion with artists Hagudeza Rullán-Fantauzz\, Liliana Pérez\, and Miguel Antonio Horn about their work and the work in the show. The curator\, Rafael Damast\, will moderate the talk. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\n\n\n\nHagudeza Rullán-Fantauzzi\n\n\n\nHagudeza Rullán-Fantauzzi is a Philadelphia-based interdisciplinary artist and storyteller. She uses her journey as an Afro-Boricua Trans woman to create work that opens dialogues around often unspoken experiences—originally from Ponce\, Puerto Rico\, Hagudeza’s early years in low-resourced communities ignited a drive to create despite limited access to artistic outlets. Over time\, they honed their voice through movement and visual expression as artists and filmmakers\, crafting original works embodying resilience and transformation. Her projects continue to evolve\, blending forms and pushing boundaries\, driven by a commitment to spark connection and foster more profound understanding. \n\n\n\nLiliana Pérez\n\n\n\nBorn in Havana\, Cuba\, Liliana Pérez’s artistic journey began at the tender age of six when she made a drawing from the balcony of her family’s second-floor apartment in Central Havana. She sketched a car and proudly shared it with her father and uncle. Her uncle taught her how to draw a car\, emphasizing geometric shapes and simplified forms. However\, his approach didn’t resonate with her vision. Determined to stay true to her perspective\, she returned to the balcony\, vowing to create the most sincere and intentional drawing she could muster. This formative experience profoundly shaped her artistic choices throughout her life. \n\n\n\nMiguel Antonio Horn\n\n\n\nMiguel Antonio Horn is a sculptor from Philadelphia with Colombian and Venezuelan roots. He creates large-format sculptures using digital and analog processes in various media. His artworks have been exhibited at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Tamaulipas\, Brownsville Museum of Fine Art\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, University of the Arts\, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, and as part of the Vancouver Biennale. He has several permanent public installations in the Philadelphia region\, Canada\, and Mexico.

SUMMARY:Bodies & Territories: Ecofeminist Legacy – Film Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 17 at 4pm\n\n\n\nat Taller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE PUBLIC EVENT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Film Screening and Conversation with Raquel Cecilia Mendieta\, Silvana Cardell\, and Mey-Yen Moriuchi at Taller Puertorriqueño\n\n\n\nBodies & Territories: Ecofeminist Legacy brings together choreographer Silvana Cardell\, filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta\, and art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi for a screening and conversation that reflects on and reimagines ecofeminist artistic practice. Silvana Cardell’s new production TERRA: Bodies & Territories will premier in June on the forested land of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in northwest Philadelphia. Cardell’s production aligns the bodies of her dance ensemble with the land\, merging human movement with nature to reveal our inextricable livelihood and empowerment. \n\n\n\nIn this program leading up to the June performances\, Cardell’s work will be discussed in conversation with the groundbreaking work of the artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985)\, whose performative artistic practice embedded her own body into the land. Filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta introduces Ana Mendieta’s work through two short films\, Ana Mendieta\, Nature Inside (8:23 min) and Whispering Cave (27 min) for this exclusive screening. Bringing Cardell’s new production and Mendieta’s work together\, art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi will moderate a conversation on the legacy of ecofeminist artistic practice and its relevance today. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters:\n\n\n\nSilvana Cardell\, a dancer\, choreographer\, and educator\, has been awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography. With roots in Argentina and the US\, she has directed dance companies and developed programs in both countries. Cardell’s performances blend dance\, theater\, and visual arts\, and draw inspiration from her personal experiences and cultural background. Her work often addresses social issues and challenges dominant cultural narratives. \n\n\n\nCardell’s performances have been showcased domestically and internationally since the late-90s. Her projects have received significant funding from prominent organizations\, including the National Endowment for the Arts\, Pew Center for the Arts & Heritage\, and the New England Foundation for the Arts\, The National Endowment for the Arts\, and Mid Atlantic Foundation of the Arts. She is also committed to advancing dance in her communities\, having founded several organizations\, including EDA Escuela de Danza del Abasto\, a three-year professional dance training program sponsored by Secretaria de Cultura de la Nacion in Argentina\, and Sala Ana Itelman\, a performance space sponsored by the Instituto Nacional del Teatro in Buenos Aires and Cardell Dance Studio in Philadelphia. \n\n\n\nIn Philadelphia\, Cardell has collaborated extensively with Manfred Fishbeck at Group Motion Dance Company\, Myra Bazell and Madison Mario at Scrap Performance\, Merian Soto\, theater director Blanka Zizka and created Cardell Dance Theater and Cardell Dance Studio. \n\n\n\nFrom 2009 to 2022\, she served as the Director and Chair of the Department of Dance at Georgian Court University. \n\n\n\nRaquel Cecilia is an independent filmmaker and writer best known for her recent films on her aunt\, artist Ana Mendieta. Her films have screened at film festivals\, art museums and galleries world-wide. Raquel is also the Administrator of the Estate of Ana Mendieta Collection and has published numerous essays about Ana Mendieta in art catalogues\, most notably the essay on her experience overseeing the digital restoration of Mendieta’s moving image works on film and video in the catalogue Ana Mendieta: Covered in Time & History. She is currently working on a feature length documentary about the life and art of Ana Mendieta and was recently awarded a large grant from a philanthropic organization to help complete the film. \n\n\n\nMey-Yen Moriuchi is the co-editor of Art and Activism in the Twenty-First Century (Routledge\, 2022) which examines the role and breadth of contemporary activist art. Dr. Moriuchi’s book\, Mexican Costumbrismo: Race\, Society\, and Identity in Nineteenth-Century Art\, was published by Penn State University Press in 2018\, and received honorable mention by the Eleanor Tufts Award committee. Dr. Moriuchi received her B.A. in History of Art and International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania\, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Art from Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Moriuchi teaches a variety of topics\, including Latin American art\, art and history of Mexico\, women and art\, public art\, and contemporary art and activism. \n\n\n\nMajor support for TERRA has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, with additional support from Georgian Court University\, and the 2025 Creative Sector Flex Fund\, a program by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

RSVP BELOW\n\n\n\nJoin artist Richie Wilde Lopez for two free community embroidery workshops at Taller Puertorriqueño. This hands-on session invites participants to contribute directly to a collaborative art installation centered on the theme of legacy—what we carry\, what we leave behind\, and what we hope to be remembered for. \n\n\n\nDuring the workshop\, participants will learn a few basic embroidery stitches and use them to stitch a single word onto cloth—something that represents their personal interpretation of legacy. These embroidered words will be collected at the end of the session and included in a larger textile installation currently in progress. \n\n\n\nThis is a space for thoughtful making\, quiet reflection\, and connection through craft. All experience levels are welcome. \n\n\n\nAll materials will be provided. Please note that participants will not keep their finished pieces\, as they will become part of the final artwork. \n\n\n\nParticipation is limited to 20 people per session. Pre-registration is encouraged. Participants must be 14 and up. \n\n\n\n \n This workshop has reached its maximum capacity and is currently closed for registration. SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Krystal Anali Vazquez - Lady Without Land
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June7 at 3pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE PUBLIC EVENT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, June 7\, with author Krystal Anali Vazquez to discuss her award-winning novel\, Lady Without Land. RSVP above! \n\n\n\nAbout the book\n\n\n\n-Winner of The 2023 George Garrett Fiction Prize\, selected by Manuel Muñoz-2024 Foreword INDIES Finalist for LGBTQ+ FictionLady without Land is a story told in fragments about señorita who feels lost in and lost without Los Angeles. She uses classic literature and cocktail recipes to organize and populate bits and pieces of a life: growing up as a Mexican middle-class girl in a predominantly white suburb where neighbors labeled her family the “dirty” Mexicans; being bullied by an older sister on car rides from Los Angeles to Mexico\, grappling with a father’s gambling addiction\, and\, later\, his death; journeying on the continuous carousel of lovers the Pacific and Atlantic coasts have to offer. A shaken and stirred abecedarian\, a sloppy yet put-together künstlerroman\, about charting one’s life path amid cultural pressures and the grip of the ever-present past\, the book can be read forwards or backwards and\, with any hope\, completely out of sequence so that no reader can read this novel the same way twice.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 24th from 4pm -6pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP BELOW\n\n\n\n\nFREE | All materials provided | Space limited to 20 participants per session | Participants must be 14 and up \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome learn some embroidery stitches! We appreciate your interest.

The discussion will cover her process methods and the themes addressed in his work.\n\n\n\nyux·ta·po·si·cíon / jux·ta·po·si·tion offers a comprehensive look at Calero’s work\, placing her practice in conversation with themes such as fashion photography\, self-representation\, gender fluidity\, and art history. However\, Calero’s work deeply embeds Caribbean visual culture\, urban influences\, and diasporic experiences into her compositions. \n\n\n\nBorn in Puerto Rico and raised mainly in New York City\, Rodríguez Calero pursued formal training at San Juan’s renowned Escuela de Artes Plásticas and the Art Students League of New York. A central figure in her artistic formation was Master Artist and Printmaker Lorenzo Homar\, whose mentorship extended beyond technical instruction to shaping her disciplined work ethic and conceptual approach to artmaking. Building upon this foundation\, Rodríguez Calero developed a distinctive pictorial language that bridges collage\, photography\, and painting.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Heather Raquel Phillips & Yoanny Aldaya & Moderated by Gabriel Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 17\, 2pm – 4pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Show\n\n\n\n\nFREE EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on January 17 for an exclusive private viewing and an intimate conversation with the artists of the exhibition “Mundos paralelos” (Parallel Worlds). The discussion will be moderated by Gabriel Martinez\, a Miami-born\, Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist and educator. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe exhibition brings together two distinct artists whose practices encompass photography\, video\, installation\, and performance. Though they come from different backgrounds—Yoanny Aldaya (b. 1984) immigrated from Havana\, Cuba\, in 2024\, while Heather Raquel Phillips (b. 1974) is a mixed-media artist of Puerto Rican descent raised in the U.S.—their work converges. Both artists utilize their craft to challenge social norms and foster safe spaces for diversity and individuality. \n\n\n\nRegister for Event\n\n\n\nFull Name *Email Address *How many people are attending with you?Just me1 more person2 more people3 or more peopleRegister\n\n\n\nProgram Schedule:\n\n\n\n2:00 PM: Private viewing of the exhibition with the artists.3:00 PM: Artist talk and moderated discussion. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeather Raquel Phillips presents a multilayered installation\, “Path to Candyland\,” which incorporates video\, painting\, DIY set design\, and banners to welcome viewers into a zone for self-care and healing. Dominated by vibrant pinks\, sculptural lollipops\, and a fantasy landscape\, her work makes parallels between the trauma of the self and the exploitation of the island of Puerto Rico.  As many U.S. citizens are experiencing an increase in hostility and intolerance of difference\, Puerto Rico continues to experience violence under colonial rule. Phillips’ work relies on collaboration\, and in this spirit\, the viewer is encouraged to interact with the installation to “finish” the work. Phillips’ work challenges social constructs that encourage us to limit ourselves\, disregard our intuition\, and conform to societal norms. In turn\, she encourages unapologetic self-expression through displays of joy that transcend societal standards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYoanny Aldaya’s contributions at the beginning of the gallery\, “de este lado de la pared” (This Side of the Wall)—encompassing photographs\, performance\, and videos—probe freedom and personal identity within the context of political restriction. The works on view bridge his life in Cuba and his new existence in Philadelphia\, blending past and present. Aldaya’s practice melds religious iconography\, both formally and metaphorically\, with an affinity for theatricality and self-hybridization. His art ultimately positions the body as a contested site where individual\, social\, political\, and cultural identities are forged. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Moderator:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabriel Martinez is a Miami-born\, Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores the intersections of Queer identity\, masculinity\, and Cuban-American heritage. Utilizing photography\, performance\, and installation\, his practice often draws from archival research to examine LGBTQ+ history and social justice. \n\n\n\nA highly decorated practitioner\, Martinez has received fellowships from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, and the Independence Foundation. He has participated in prestigious residencies at MacDowell\, Yaddo\, and the Fabric Workshop and Museum.
