However\, Calero’s work deeply embeds Caribbean visual culture\, urban influences\, and diasporic experiences into her compositions. \n\n\n\nBorn in Puerto Rico and raised mainly in New York City\, Rodríguez Calero pursued formal training at San Juan’s renowned Escuela de Artes Plásticas and the Art Students League of New York. A central figure in her artistic formation was Master Artist and Printmaker Lorenzo Homar\, whose mentorship extended beyond technical instruction to shaping her disciplined work ethic and conceptual approach to artmaking. Building upon this foundation\, Rodríguez Calero developed a distinctive pictorial language that bridges collage\, photography\, and painting.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Heather Raquel Phillips & Yoanny Aldaya & Moderated by Gabriel Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 17\, 2pm – 4pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Show\n\n\n\n\nFREE EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on January 17 for an exclusive private viewing and an intimate conversation with the artists of the exhibition “Mundos paralelos” (Parallel Worlds). The discussion will be moderated by Gabriel Martinez\, a Miami-born\, Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist and educator. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe exhibition brings together two distinct artists whose practices encompass photography\, video\, installation\, and performance. Though they come from different backgrounds—Yoanny Aldaya (b. 1984) immigrated from Havana\, Cuba\, in 2024\, while Heather Raquel Phillips (b. 1974) is a mixed-media artist of Puerto Rican descent raised in the U.S.—their work converges. Both artists utilize their craft to challenge social norms and foster safe spaces for diversity and individuality. \n\n\n\nRegister for Event\n\n\n\nFull Name *Email Address *How many people are attending with you?Just me1 more person2 more people3 or more peopleRegister\n\n\n\nProgram Schedule:\n\n\n\n2:00 PM: Private viewing of the exhibition with the artists.3:00 PM: Artist talk and moderated discussion. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeather Raquel Phillips presents a multilayered installation\, “Path to Candyland\,” which incorporates video\, painting\, DIY set design\, and banners to welcome viewers into a zone for self-care and healing. Dominated by vibrant pinks\, sculptural lollipops\, and a fantasy landscape\, her work makes parallels between the trauma of the self and the exploitation of the island of Puerto Rico.  As many U.S. citizens are experiencing an increase in hostility and intolerance of difference\, Puerto Rico continues to experience violence under colonial rule. Phillips’ work relies on collaboration\, and in this spirit\, the viewer is encouraged to interact with the installation to “finish” the work. Phillips’ work challenges social constructs that encourage us to limit ourselves\, disregard our intuition\, and conform to societal norms. In turn\, she encourages unapologetic self-expression through displays of joy that transcend societal standards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYoanny Aldaya’s contributions at the beginning of the gallery\, “de este lado de la pared” (This Side of the Wall)—encompassing photographs\, performance\, and videos—probe freedom and personal identity within the context of political restriction. The works on view bridge his life in Cuba and his new existence in Philadelphia\, blending past and present. Aldaya’s practice melds religious iconography\, both formally and metaphorically\, with an affinity for theatricality and self-hybridization. His art ultimately positions the body as a contested site where individual\, social\, political\, and cultural identities are forged. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Moderator:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabriel Martinez is a Miami-born\, Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores the intersections of Queer identity\, masculinity\, and Cuban-American heritage. Utilizing photography\, performance\, and installation\, his practice often draws from archival research to examine LGBTQ+ history and social justice. \n\n\n\nA highly decorated practitioner\, Martinez has received fellowships from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, and the Independence Foundation. He has participated in prestigious residencies at MacDowell\, Yaddo\, and the Fabric Workshop and Museum.

SUMMARY:Reception: Jorge Luis Rodríguez – Orisha / Santos – An Artistic Interpretation of the Seven African Powers
DESCRIPTION:LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Friday\, February 13 at 5:30pm for the reception of a groundbreaking installation by Puerto Rican artist Jorge Luis Rodriguez — Orisha/Santos: An Artistic Interpretation of the Seven African Powers. \n\n\n\nFull Name *Email Address *How many people are attending with you?Just me1 more person2 more people3 or more peopleRegister\n\n\n\nFirst shown at MoCHA in 1985\, this work reshaped how Afro-Caribbean spirituality\, minimalism\, and sculpture intertwined. Rodriguez now brings this historic installation to Taller Puertorriqueño\, working closely with Philadelphia-based artists Yoanny Aldaya and Danny Melendez\, both deeply rooted in Santería traditions. \n\n\n\nThrough cut steel forms and layered symbolism\, Rodriguez reimagines the Orishas\, revealing their enduring power and connection to resilience\, faith\, and identity. Each piece bridges Yoruba deities and their syncretized Christian counterparts\, capturing the spirit and the resistance of Afro-diasporic survival. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this monumental return.

SUMMARY:Arturo Schomburg Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Saturday \,February 28 from 9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets & Learn More\n\n\n\n\nTicketed Event | $10\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 30th Annual Arturo Schomburg Symposium traces how African-descended peoples\, both enslaved and free\, have sustained cultures and liberation struggles through rich\, dynamic\, spiritual\, and religious expressions. \n\n\n\nAs the United States commemorates the Semiquincentennial in 2026\, Taller Puertorriqueño’s guiding theme\, “We Will Not Hide\,” draws inspiration from the 1976 “Sin Colonias March” in Philadelphia—also called the “People’s Bicentennial”—which united over 40\,000 African Americans\, Indigenous activists\, Puerto Ricans\, and allies in a powerful demonstration of solidarity and resistance to a narrative that ignores their presence\, needs\, and contributions. This historic coalition serves as a touchstone for the symposium’s commitment to visibility\, dignity\, and self-determination. The Schomburg Symposium will kick off this year’s programming. \n\n\n\nThe Schomburg Symposium has\, for the past 29 years\, presented critical\, celebratory\, and reflective perspectives from the Latine\, Latin American\, African American\, and AfroLatine communities\, featuring leading scholars\, activists\, artists\, and community voices. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the Symposium’s programming here.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mom with author Vincent Tirado in conversation with Diana Rodriguez Wallach
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 17\, 6:30pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to celebrate the launch of YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN NICER TO MY MOM\, a modern gothic horror by local author Vincent Tirado. \n\n\n\nAbout the book:Demons clash with inheritance claims as secrets unfold and violence is unleashed over twelve harrowing hours trapped in a house with the worst thing imaginable: family. \n\n\n\nWhen Papi Ramon\, the patriarch of the wealthy Abreu family dies\, he gives the family one last message in the will: “One of you is el bacà\, the demon that I made a deal with. Get rid of them or you will be damned.” Xiomara\, the uncontested favorite of Papi Ramon (and therefore the least liked in the family)\, watches as everyone dismisses this as the joke of a senile old man and demands the lawyer obtain the previous will Papi wrote. \n\n\n\nWhile the lawyer drives back to his office\, a storm breaks out\, forcing the entire family—Xiomara’s aunts and uncles and cousins—to remain in the house. And the words of Papi’s will hangs over their heads even heavier than the rain clouds. Over the course of the night\, scandal after scandal is revealed to the public about the family. Suddenly a tense few hours of surviving her family turns into a vicious night of recrimination\, violence\, accusations…and murder.Xiomara is faced with an impossible task: uproot a demon and somehow kill it or excise the ghosts that linger within her own family. \n\n\n\nAnd the clock is ticking…

SUMMARY:Jorge Luis Rodríguez: The Playing of the Music Boxes - Featuring Timbalona Collective
DESCRIPTION:LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Event  \n\n\n\nThe Timbalona Collective is a dynamic percussion ensemble rooted in the vibrant traditions of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American folk music. This performance will realize Jorge Luis Rodriguez’s long-held dream of seeing his sculpture series\, The Music Boxes\, played as musical instruments. \n\n\n\nFull Name *Email Address *How many people are attending with you?Just me1 more person2 more people3 or more peopleRegister\n\n\n\nThe Sculptures \n\n\n\n Created in 1981 while Rodriguez was a resident artist at the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Cajas musicales are crafted from welded steel and deeply influenced by African Art. Each of the eight boxes is distinct\, possessing its own unique aesthetic and resonance. Rodriguez’s work has always been experimental\, pushing the boundaries of modernism and redefining our understanding of sculpture. Join us for this inaugural event—45 years in the making. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \n\n\n\n Rodríguez is a pioneering multidisciplinary artist whose career bridges minimalism\, site-specific installation\, and Afro-Caribbean cultural expression. After moving from Puerto Rico to New York in 1963\, he absorbed the city’s emerging art movements—minimalism\, optical art\, and environmental art—before “abandoning the canvas” in the 1970s to pursue sculpture. Following his studies at the School of Visual Arts and New York University\, he developed a visual language that fuses formal precision with symbolic and cultural depth. His early works\, shaped by the alternative art scenes of Harlem and SoHo\, reflect a growing dialogue regarding culture\, modernism\, and art in public spaces.
