Reception for the Complicit Eye The Complicit Eye, Kukuli Velarde’s first major exhibition in Philadelphia of paintings and sculptures, deconstructs ideals of female beauty from colonization to the local barrio. A 2015 Guggenheim fellow, Velarde’s show features work that interrogates the construction and consumption of beauty in Western culture, with self-portraits of her as “the other”– a woman, an immigrant, or merely a mature body, and sculptures that flip the male gaze.
