SUMMARY:Tertulias Culturales Series- Diego Castellanos: The Face of Latinos in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas\, in partnership with Taller Puertorriqueño\, is reviving its popular Tertulia–a fun gathering to explore our community’s traditions and roots. We will honor both our community members\, who have left their legacy–a foundation–and those who continue to build on that legacy to ensure the Latino community in Philadelphia prospers and serves future generations. \n\n\n\nAs host of the 6abc television show “Puerto Rican Panorama” from 1970 to 2018\, as well as co-host of the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade in our city\, Diego was a consistent presence and reminder of the many facets of the Latino community in Philadelphia and environs. However\, as the tertulia will show\, Diego’s expertise included much more than the show\, impressive as that was. Diego was also a journalist\, an educator\, and an author\, among other accomplishments. We lost Diego in 2022\, but his impact is still felt in the community and no doubt will continue to be felt for many years to come. An open mic session will enable Diego’s family and the community at large to share their experiences of how he affected their lives. \n\n\n\nThere will be antojitos to snack on\, a time for networking\, and music to keep us in a festive mood!

SUMMARY:Sala Abierta Design Project Showcase
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT \n\n\n\nWe are very pleased to showcase the latest design proposal of the outdoor space on Monday\, August 14th\, from 6 to 9 pm hosted at Puertorriqueño. We will have food and drink\, so bring family and friends! \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2016\, Taller Puertorriqueño moved to a new building—El Corazón Cultural Center at 2600 North 5th Street. Its construction was the most comprehensive endeavor Taller has undertaken since its founding in 1974. The building is used in a variety of ways\, but arts and culture are the focus—art classes are offered for all ages; a gallery showcases emerging artists in the community; works of art from the organization’s founders\, neighbors\, and activists cover every wall. The “Sala Abierta” project\, or “Open Living Room\,” seeks to harness the love\, care\, and identity that occurs within the building and have it spill out to its underutilized exterior courtyards in hopes of providing spaces for wellness and gathering. These improvements plan to physically connect Taller with its community so staff\, students\, and neighbors alike may benefit from them! \n\n\n\nPenn Praxis is a non-profit design and planning organization that creates a platform for University of Pennsylvania faculty and graduate students to collaborate with partners on projects that demonstrate the power of community-engaged design. Over the past few months\, students\, alumni\, and faculty from the building and landscape architecture masters’ programs at Penn worked with Taller and its neighbors and friends on the “Sala Abierta” project to design improvements to the outdoor spaces surrounding El Corazón. We discovered from community focus groups that people are excited for nature\, spaces to gather\, and the various types of events that could be held in these spaces.

SUMMARY:Tertulias "Honoring Our Past\, Envisioning Our Future": José Alí Paz and His Art
DESCRIPTION:Who was the painter of some of the largest murals in the Latino community? \n\n\n\nRaíces Culturales Latinoamericanas\, in partnership with Taller Puertorriqueño\, is reviving its popular Tertulia–a fun gathering to explore our community’s traditions and roots–with a quarterly series in 2023 titled “Honoring Our Past\, Envisioning Our Future”.  We will honor both our community members\, who have left their legacy–a foundation–and those who continue to build on that legacy to ensure the Latino community in Philadelphia prospers and serves future generations.   \n\n\n\nOur next tertulia in this series is “José Alí Paz and His Art” on Wednesday\, June 14 from 6 to 9 pm at the Taller Puertorriqueño at 2600 N. 5th Street in Philadelphia.  José\, a native of Venezuela\, arrived in Philadelphia in 2000 with his family and created many memorable works of art\, such as murals including one at the Taller Puertorriqueño’s former facilities\, as well as the Raíces logo and colorful backdrops for Raíces performances\, displaying a unique talent for communicating the Latino cultural experience as a visual artist.  Despite developing brain cancer\, he was determined to continue creating his art before finally succumbing to the disease in 2008. We will hear from his family and collaborators\, such as fellow muralists and members of the organization Casa de Venezuela\, who were privileged to work alongside him and touched by his generosity of spirit.  An open mic session invites the insights and participation of individuals\, including visual artists who have continued his legacy in the community. \n\n\n\nThere will be antojitos to snack on\, a time for networking\, and music to keep us in a festive mood! \n\n\n\nFree In-Person Event

SUMMARY:Art at Noon: Nitza Tufiño – Asserting Presence
DESCRIPTION:Join Mexi-Rican artist Nitza Tufiño and Taller Puertorriqueño Curator\, Rafael Damast\, in a virtual conversation about Nitza’s work and lifelong contributions to creating spaces and opportunities for artists who could not fine acceptance in established American art institutions. To Nitza\, seeing is an act of acknowledgment\, and being seen is an act of asserting agency. With a vast body of work\, Nitza commemorates the people she knows and addresses historical inaccuracies. In her prints\, paintings\, installations\, murals\, and mosaics\, she brings attention to the people of her community and the cultural richness of the cosmology of the indigenous people of the Caribbean\, the Taínos\, whose influence persists. \n\n\n\nTufiño’s current solo exhibition\, Asserting Presence\, is on view at Taller Puertorriqueño through May 13\, 2023. \n\n\n\nThis is a FREE Virtual Event \n\n\n\n\nRegister
