SUMMARY:Picturing the Border Series: Michelle Angela Ortiz and Dr. Veronica Montes
DESCRIPTION:This event will be held at Taller Puertorriqueño in Philadelphia.  Artist Michelle Angela Ortiz and Dr. Veronica Montes will speak about their interdisciplinary collaborations and the ways that art can be a tool for activism and the study of migration. \n\n\n\nMichelle Angela Ortiz is an award-winning visual artist\, skilled muralist\, community arts educator\, and filmmaker who uses her art as a vehicle to represent people and communities whose histories are often lost or co-opted. Her work tells stories using richly crafted and emotive imagery to claim and transform spaces into a visual affirmation that reveals the strength and spirit of the community. \n\n\n\nOrtiz has worked with Dr. Veronica Montes\, Associate Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of Latin American\, Iberian\, and Latina/o Studies at Bryn Mawr College. For this event the two will speak about their interdisciplinary collaborations and the ways that art can be a tool for activism and the study of migration. SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Bessie Flores Zaldívar
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 9 at 3pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE PUBLIC EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, November 9th at 3pm for a Q&A and book signing with author of Libertad\, Bessie Flores Zaldívar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nA queer YA coming-of-age set during the rigged Honduran presidential election about a young poet discovering the courage it takes to speak her truth about the people and country she loves. \n\n\n\nAs the contentious 2017 presidential election looms and protests rage across every corner of the city\, life in Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, churns louder and faster. For her part\, high school senior Libertad (Libi) Morazán takes heart in writing political poetry for her anonymous Instagram account and a budding romance with someone new. But things come to a head when Mami sees texts on her phone mentioning a kiss with a girl and Libi discovers her beloved older brother\, Maynor\, playing a major role in the protests. As Libertad faces the political and social corruption around her\, stifling homophobia at home and school\, and ramped up threats to her poetry online\, she begins dreaming of a future in which she doesn’t have to hide who she is or worry about someone she loves losing their life just for speaking up. Then the ultimate tragedy strikes\, and leaving her family and friends—plus the only home she’s ever known—might be her only option. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nBorn in 1997 in Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, Bessie FloresZaldívar is a writer and professor of fiction. They’re currently based in the New Haven area. Libertad is Bessie’s debut novel.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Patricia Coral
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 23 at 3pm\n\n\n\nTaller Puertorriqueño | 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n\nFREE PUBLIC EVENT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, November 23rd at 3pm for a conversation with author of Women Surrounded by Water\, Patricia Coral in conversation with Adrienne Perry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nGrowing up in Puerto Rico\, Patricia Coral was surrounded by women who fought for their needs amid the demands of domesticity and who were dismissed and judged when they rejected any predetermined paths on an island that itself has never been free. At age twenty-five\, she married her first love\, a green-eyed musician whose internal storms drove Coral to slowly realize that the marriage must end. Faced with disillusionment—with her husband\, with the patriarchal expectations that surrounded her like the Caribbean Sea\, and with the limited options available to her—she leaves\, only for Hurricane Maria to wrench her heart homeward. \n\n\n\nCoral evokes the beauty\, love\, and language of her family and of Puerto Rico as well as the pain of yearning for more. Tastes\, colors\, and the dreamlike lushness of childhood memories infuse this mournful and propulsive memoir of personal and natural disasters—and the self-discovery made possible only when we choose what to leave behind. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nPatricia Coral is a bilingual Puerto Rican writer. She holds an MFA in creative writing from American University\, where she received the Myra Sklarew Award and where she was Editor in Chief of FOLIO. Coral writes creative nonfiction and poetry\, but frequently her words find their home in between. The former events director for Politics and Prose Bookstore\, she has contributed to numerous literary magazines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Moderator\n\n\n\nAdrienne Perry grew up in Wyoming\, earned her MFA from Warren Wilson College\, and her PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. From 2014-2016 she served as the Editor of Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. A Hedgebrook alumna\, Adrienne is also a Kimbilio Fellow and a member of the Rabble Collective. Adrienne’s writing has received support from Friends of Writers\, the Elizabeth George Foundation\, Inprint\, and the University of Houston. In 2020\, Adrienne received the inaugural Elizabeth Alexander Prize in Creative Writing from Meridians journal. Adrienne’s work has appeared or is forthcoming in Copper Nickel\, Black Warrior Review\, Indiana Review\, Ninth Letter\, and elsewhere. She is an Assistant Professor of literature and creative writing at at Villanova University.
