SUMMARY:Picturing the Border Series: Michelle Angela Ortiz and Dr. Veronica Montes
DESCRIPTION:This event will be held at Taller Puertorriqueño in Philadelphia.  Artist Michelle Angela Ortiz and Dr. Veronica Montes will speak about their interdisciplinary collaborations and the ways that art can be a tool for activism and the study of migration. \n\n\n\nMichelle Angela Ortiz is an award-winning visual artist\, skilled muralist\, community arts educator\, and filmmaker who uses her art as a vehicle to represent people and communities whose histories are often lost or co-opted. Through community arts practices\, painting\, documentaries\, and public art installations\, she creates a safe space for dialogue around some of the most profound issues communities and individuals may face. Her work tells stories using richly crafted and emotive imagery to claim and transform spaces into a visual affirmation that reveals the strength and spirit of the community. \n\n\n\nOrtiz has worked with Dr. Veronica Montes\, Associate Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of Latin American\, Iberian\, and Latina/o Studies at Bryn Mawr College. For this event the two will speak about their interdisciplinary collaborations and the ways that art can be a tool for activism and the study of migration. Rafael Damast will moderate the discussion. \n\n\n\nThe event will be held at Taller Puertorriqueño\, 2600 N. 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133. Free visitor parking is available in the rear of the building on Huntingdon St. \n\n\n\nPlease register on the form here

For her part\, high school senior Libertad (Libi) Morazán takes heart in writing political poetry for her anonymous Instagram account and a budding romance with someone new. But things come to a head when Mami sees texts on her phone mentioning a kiss with a girl and Libi discovers her beloved older brother\, Maynor\, playing a major role in the protests. As Libertad faces the political and social corruption around her\, stifling homophobia at home and school\, and ramped up threats to her poetry online\, she begins dreaming of a future in which she doesn’t have to hide who she is or worry about someone she loves losing their life just for speaking up. Then the ultimate tragedy strikes\, and leaving her family and friends—plus the only home she’s ever known—might be her only option. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nBorn in 1997 in Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, Bessie FloresZaldívar is a writer and professor of fiction.
