Celebrating 50 incredible years of artistry, education, and community impact. As we mark this golden milestone, Taller Puertorriqueño is offering a very special lineup of 50th anniversary programming for 2024.
Join us in celebrating Taller Puertorriqueno’s legacy over the past five decades!
Founded in 1974, Taller also known as “El Corazón Cultural del Barrio” has worked to preserve, develop, and promote Puerto Rican arts and culture. Over the past five decades Taller has grown into a destination that catalyzes community development through its arts and cultural resources and builds bridges between the local community, the region, and the Puerto Rican and Latino Diaspora.
Pulling from the archives of both the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and Taller Puertorriqueño, this exhibit investigates themes of migration and community, culture and identity, and preservation of memory. This exhibit revisits Batiendo La Olla, an oral history project produced by Taller Puertorriqueño in the 1970s. The project produced interviews that document Puerto Rican migration to Philadelphia, compare generational value and life experiences, and provide an opportunity for reflection and intergenerational dialogue
Julia de Burgos Bookstore welcomes Luis A. Miranda Jr., Latino trailblazer and father of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, to present his new memoir, Relentless: My Story of the Latino Spirit That is Transforming America, in conversation with Dr. Carmen Febo San Miguel as part of Taller Puertorriqueño’s 50th anniversary programming. The conversation will be followed by a book signing. Admission is included with purchase of book.
Estamos Aquí celebrates the neighborhood through streets, avenues, and symbols. It offers a backdrop for the community to be heard and seen, following the mantra “Estamos Aquí (We Are Here).”
The project resulted in significant works of art by the artist José Ortiz Pagán, Cartografía de Otro rincón (2023), installed in the atrium, and El Maestro de Dos Mundos (2023), affixed to Taller Puertorriqueño’s facade. These artworks represent the forces that attracted people to the area, including the textile factories central to Fairhill’s employment landscape, and encapsulate the history of Puerto Ricans seeking recognition and fair treatment. Ultimately, the project is a vehicle to center the neighborhood in our consciousness and speak to its history and the people’s resilience.
