Conociéndote (Getting to Know You): Bridging the Audience Divide/ On view through October

Opened in May of 2014

Conociéndote (Getting to Know You): Bridging the Audience Divide is Taller’s 2013 John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge award-winning project, bridging Philadelphia’s audience divide with events and exhibitions in May, July, and September of 2014.  The events connect the work of five organizations in North Philadelphia around three commissioned, month-long, socially conscious outdoor art installations by artists Nancy Salame & Patricia Cazorla, José Ortiz Pagán, and Andria Morales & Maya Escobar.  The commissioned work addresses the history of women in the textile industry of the area, the hopes and dreams of the migrant Latino community, and the commercial images being created as they look towards the future. The partner organizations are Congreso de Latinos Unidos, HACE, Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas, and a Seed on Diamond Gallery. For the May and July receptions, a trolley will transport the public between sites.

A performance will close each event at 8:30 p.m.

Description and links to each project are below

Conociéndote: Brocados  (Opening Event May 9th 5:30–8:30. On view through June 14th.) New York-based artists Patricia Cazorla and Nancy Saleme’s site-specific installation in Taller’s adjacent garden pays homage, through textile designs, cutouts and interviews, to the history of the area’s textile industry and its connection to Latina women and their struggles. Conociéndote: Por las Nubes/In the Clouds (Opening Event July 11th 5:30–8:30. On view through August 16th.) Philadelphia-based artist José A. Ortiz Pagán transforms Taller’s garden into a sanctuary with this sculptural installation allowing viewers to contemplate time.  It echoes the migratory dreams and reconsideration of travel and departure of the people in the area. “Por las nubes” is a popular Caribbean expression that describes how far and out of reach something could be.  Learn more here.

Conociéndote: YO SOY ORO/I AM GOLD (Opening Event September 21 during Feria del Barrio. On view through October 18th.) A multi-media performative installation by the artist collaborative Escobar-Morales’ American Media Output.  Premiering during Feria del Barrio, their campaign will use marketing techniques and advertising to challenge and explore the Latino community’s image of itself.  The project will consist of ongoing community engagement and cultural ambassadors.  Learn more here.
