Our Mission

Taller Puertorriqueño, a community based cultural organization whose primary purpose is to preserve, develop, and promote Puerto Rican arts and culture, grounded in the conviction that embracing one’s cultural heritage is empowering. Taller is also committed to the representation and support of other Latino cultural expressions and our common roots.

Our Vision

Taller Puertorriqueño is guided by the vision of a Latino community that is engaged, culturally aware, and economically vibrant in a society that values its cultural diversity. Taller is a destination that catalyzes community development through its arts and cultural resources and builds bridges between the local community, the region, and the Puerto Rican and Latino Diaspora.

Our Values

Integrity

We strive for transparency, fiscal responsibility, and excellence in all organizational practices.

Inclusiveness and embracing diversity

We value an awareness of cultural sensitivity, cultural competence and cultural authenticity.

Social Justice and civic responsibility

We remain committed to community empowerment and broad-based collaboration.

Land Acknowledgement

Taller Puertorriqueño recognizes Philadelphia as part of Lënapehòkink, the stolen, contemporary, traditional and ancestral homeland of the Lenape people.

Inclusive Language

We acknowledge that there are many different terms to describe various identities within “Latinidad”, we choose to use the terms Latinx and Latine because we feel it is inclusive of many identities.

Solidarity Statement

Taller wants to add our voice to the collective statement demanding justice and action regarding police brutality in our community.

This is yet another example of the distrust that exists because of the open wounds that go unaddressed. Please read this letter to Mayor Jim Kenney regarding the death of Eddie Irizarry by Executive Director of Ceiba, Will Gonzalez.

Our History

1974
Founded in 1974 by Puerto Rican/Latino artists and activists in the North Kensington area of Philadelphia, Taller stands as testament to the wealth of possibilities created when citizens see a need in their community and decide to meet it. Central to this workshop was the idea of passing along traditional culture, to help empower young people through pride in their heritage.
2016
In December 2016, Taller opened its new state-of-the-art El Corazón Cultural Center, the most complex capacity and programmatic expansion the organization has experienced.
2021
On Oct. 13, 2021, fashion designer Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González is announced as the new executive director of Taller Puertorriqueño.
