Youth Artist Program

Studio Program Opens September 13

(YAP) is a two year after school art program for high school students that equips them with the tools to thrive in today’s creative economy. This program offers the resources and guidance young artists need to explore their personal and cultural identity and express their creative vision.

Through a combination of individual project-based learning and instruction from experienced artist mentors, teen artists develop their talents in a range of digital media and fine art practices, from animation and illustration to drawing, painting, and printmaking. Each school year, they produce a professionally published zine, learning about typography and layout. Young artists also build a substantial portfolio of work for application to art school or other post-secondary pursuits. At the end of the school year, they help curate an exhibition of their work in Taller’s Lorenzo Homar Gallery.

Over the summer, YAP youth artists can apply for the Delphi Summer Teen Media Program, a six week paid summer internship that provides instruction in the visual arts and filmmaking. Those selected as interns learn about acting, screenwriting, lighting, cinematography, editing, and producing from professional filmmakers. They create a portfolio of short films and present them at public screenings. This internship is done in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Esperanza High School, and Big Picture Alliance.

YAP includes one-on-one tutoring and homework help, as well as light meals, and SEPTA tokens for public transport.

A desire to learn, a strong sense of personal responsibility, and a commitment to completing the program are a must. No prior artistic training is necessary.

$30 per semester* to cover the cost of materials and supplies.
*Young artists who are covered by Health Partners Plans will have the fee waived.
