Samuel Lind / Portales
October 4 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
On view through January 11, 2020
A cultural ambassador, artist, and activist in his town of Loiza, Samuel Lind (b. 1954 Loiza, Puerto Rico), makes work that brings awareness to issues regarding racial justice, spirituality, cultural legacy, and gentrification. Reared and based in this majority Afro-Latino town, Lind, an Afro-Caribbean artist created in his house and studio a cultural depository and safe space for the people to celebrate and preserve their heritage in the face of climate and economic disruptions.
Lind’s more recent paintings, sculptures, and silkscreen prints often represent these individuals as nature-symbiotic deities that challenge the norms of spiritual sanctification. In Taller, he brings to Philadelphia for the very first time this news series of paintings and sculptures.
