Misk’i Kachi Closing Reception

Please join us on Saturday, May 29th from 3-6pm, for the closing reception for the show Misk’i Kachi Runakuna. The reception will start with a discussion with Américo Mendoza-Mori on the importance of sustaining indigenous languages. Dr. Mendoza-Mori will discuss how Quechua, an indigenous Andean language, has enriched us by providing new vocabulary, culturally specific understandings, and furthering our appreciation of the Americas. The talk will be followed by a book launch of a monograph of Laurence Salzmann’s complete photographic work. The outdoor event, to follow COVID recommendations, is free and will feature live music by INKARAYKU and food from South Philly Barbacoa.

A mask is required to enter the building for the gallery, gift shop, and restrooms. A tent will be set up outdoors. Free parking lot available (entrance on Huntingdon Street).

Americo Mendoza-Mori

Américo Mendoza–Mori teaches Quechua and Spanish at the University of Pennsylvania, where he designed the Quechua Language Program. He received his B.A. in Literature from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, in Lima (Peru), and completed a Ph.D. in Literary, Cultural and Linguistic studies at the University of Miami, Florida. His research focuses on Andean Culture, Quechua language, and cultural policies.

Dr. Mendoza-Mori’s work has appeared in a variety of academic publications, has been presented at the United Nations, and has been featured in The New York Times, a TEDx talk, NPR, Remezcla. He has collaborated actively with academic and community-based organizations in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and the United States. | Quechua Language Program Coordinator, Faculty  (pronouns: he/him, él, pay)
