Rice is Everything, the closing event for Dorcas Tang’s Los Paisanos del Puerto at Taller Puertorriqueño. At the heart of this event is the profound role of rice, tracing its origins from Asia and evolving into a culinary cornerstone across Latin America.

This closing celebration encapsulates the essence of Tang’s exhibition, Los Paisanos del Puerto (2018 – ongoing), which intricately explores the stories of the Chinese diaspora in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The exhibition presents a kaleidoscopic view of the community through portraits, through captivating portraits, vernacular photo albums, archival state images, and compelling oral interviews.

The evening will feature an engaging presentation and conversation with Chef Yun Fuentes, offering insights into the cultural significance of food within communities undergoing change. Guided tours of the exhibition will be available in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. These tours will be thoughtfully led by artist Dorcas Tang, the show’s curator Rafael Damast, and Edwin Porras, Assistant Professor of Musicology and Ethnography.

3 PM – 4 PM: Eating and interacting with guests and artists.
