Collaboration between RaÃces Culturales Latinoamericanas and Taller Puertorriqueño
When did the Puerto Rican Day parade begin? Who founded the Concilio or Taller Puertorriqueño? RaÃces Culturales Latinoamericanas, in partnership with Taller Puertorriqueño, is reviving its popular Tertulia–a fun gathering to explore our community’s traditions and roots–with a quarterly series in 2023 titled “Honoring Our Past, Envisioning Our Future”. We will honor both our community members, who have left their legacy–a foundation–and those who continue to build on that legacy to ensure the Latino community in Philadelphia prospers and serves future generations.
Our first tertulia in this series is “The Legacy of Ramonita Rivera”. We will highlight some of her many contributions to our community before her untimely death in 1994, including her leadership in Taller’s early years, her role at Concilio and her support helping RaÃces get started. Her family members and others who knew her will give their own accounts of Ramonita and her community work. An open mic session invites the insights and participation of all who are eagerly following in Ramonita’s footsteps and giving back to the community as it grows and becomes even more diversified.
There will be Peruvian antojitos from Brazas Restaurant to snack on, a time for networking, and music by RaÃces Boricuas and Puerto Rican trovador Nieves López with a surprise young artist to get us in a festive mood!Â
