Since its founding in 1972, Brandywine Workshop has been dedicated to the creation, documentation and preservation of a legacy of culturally diverse American art and ensuring the participation of multi-ethnic artists in the field of fine art printmaking and related media technologies. One of the key programs sponsored by Brandywine is the Visiting Artist Residency program, which host local, national and international artists in a collaborative setting with master printers. This program has resulted in a growing archive of contemporary fine art prints, the production of numerous national and international exhibitions, and several satellite collections at institutions across the United States.

The Dream of Joyce de Guatemala

Joyce de Guatemala Bush Vourvoulias was born in Mexico City to Cassius Albert Bush and Martha Bush of Guatemalan heritage. She was a former visiting artist and Board member of Brandywine Workshop who died suddenly in 2000 leaving a legacy of artistic works and service that reflected her interests in the environment and people, especially Latina women artists. She was particularly interested in the plight of those who were geographically or economically isolated and having few opportunities to advance their art careers.  Her husband, Jason, who died shortly after Joyce, shared this interest and a passion for the arts. Acting upon the dream of Joyce to bring more Latina women visiting artists to Brandywine for exposure, training and career advancement, the family established the Joyce de Guatemala and Jason Vourvoulias Scholarship funds to support the goal. In order to fully realize Joyce’s dream, sponsored artists would demonstrate a commitment to furthering their career through the residency opportunity and explore public service through their art.


Residency Description

Each artist is asked to think in terms of multiples of an image. In addition to original prints, limited editions of collages, mixed-media works on paper and dimensional works may be considered. The key is to have enough works so that they can be distributed (50/50 with Brandywine) which would leave images available for distribution to public collections, sale to help fund future residencies going forward and placement in the permanent Collection and Archives of Brandywine.

In addition to one-half of all images produced, each artist will be provided a budget of $2,500 to be spent on master printer fees, shop assistants, art supplies and materials or services needed. Brandywine’s studio facilities will be provided for their use during a 3-6 month period of execution.  Each artist will have access 7 days per week from 9:00 AM- 9:00 PM. Funds must not be used for room, board or travel expenses; the project is intended for artists staying locally.

Artists are able to apply for either a spring (March – May), summer (June- August) or fall (Sept- Nov) residency period.

Distribution of Completed Art Works/ Multiples/Prints

Multiples or prints retained by Brandywine with be deposited into its permanent collections/archives, offered for distribution to partner institutions as part of the satellite collections program, included in local and traveling exhibitions. The remainder of the multiples/prints will be offered for sale to help fund future visiting artist’s residencies and add to the deGuatemala Scholarship Fund.


Artist must be committed to their artistic practice and able to present a portfolio of at least ten (10) images created in the last three years in any artistic medium (they need not be printmakers, but must specialize in a visual art form, including installations and performance -based art work). They should not be currently attending college.


1-Artist must submit a current resume (1-2 Page minimum) of activities and accomplishments,

2-A short description of your proposed project, if available, and written answers to the following questions on the application form:

3-Ten images created within the past three years in digital format (jpg 300dpi) by email to or by using Slide Room. You may also mail hard copy using a CD of your images to Brandywine Workshop. Be sure to provide with each image or on a separate sheet of paper- title, dimensions, medium and date.

Application Deadline: Submit all three items by Friday, August 15, 2014 at 5:00 PM. This is not a postmarked deadline, incomplete applications and those submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
