Tramando

Taller Puertorriqueño’s Textile Design Workshop

Tramando is a workshop series by dedicated to empowering individuals and diaspora communities through collective art-making and cultural preservation. Our aim is to foster agency and sustainable economic practices while celebrating the rich tapestry of Puerto Rican and Latino culture.

We provide 12-week workshops, each centered on natural dyeing, weaving, or traditional mundillo lace-making. Each workshop features a dedicated curriculum tailored to the specific craft, led by experienced artists. Open to all skill levels, these workshops delve into both technique and the cultural importance of textile design.

Semillas

Raul Ortiz Bonilla

Semillas features sixteen artworks by Puerto Rican artist Raul Ortiz Bonilla (b. 1955), who immigrated from Puerto Rico to Chicago in his early twenties.

The various sections of the gallery take the audience through three stages of the island’s history: pre-colonization, mass migration during colonial periods, and the present moment. However, the artworks in the exhibition are not historical narratives of the past and present. Instead, the art stems from Ortiz Bonilla’s surreal memories of the island he once called home and the realities he met in the midwestern landscape he now calls home.
