For more than 30 years, Johnny Irizarry has been an educator and artist promoting greater awareness of Latinx culture and history. In the 1990s, he was the director of Taller Puertorriqueño, leading the organization through a pivotal time. In his first show at Taller, he presents new work in photography, painting, collage, and sculpture that address violence, humanity’s impact on nature, and the power of folk tales.
In his new show, Irizarry confronts the 2020 death of George Floyd, Philadelphia’s spike in gun violence, and the struggles of Puerto Ricans to sustain their unique identity in the shadow of American hegemony.
