Tramando: Collective Making, Continued Traditions

Work from our Tramando Cohorts

July 17 – August 15, 2026

Tramando is a community-based textile arts initiative that celebrates the power of making as a means of cultural preservation, creative expression, and collective growth. Rooted in Kensington’s rich textile history, the program brings together artists, culture bearers, and community members to learn, share, and sustain traditional textile practices across generations.

Over the course of three modules, nearly sixty participants from across Philadelphia gathered to study natural dyeing and fiber spinning, Maya backstrap weaving, and embroidery practices spanning traditional and contemporary approaches, under the guidance of master artists and educators. Through these shared learning experiences, participants developed technical skills while forging new relationships rooted in collaboration, curiosity, and cultural exchange.

The works presented in this exhibition are the result of that collective journey. Each object reflects the hands that made it, the stories shared, and the knowledge and connections woven throughout the program.

Together, these works celebrate the enduring connections between craft, culture, and the communities that keep them alive. Learn more about the Tramando project here.

Tramando has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage is a multidisciplinary grantmaker and hub for knowledge-sharing, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, dedicated to fostering a vibrant cultural community in Greater Philadelphia. The Center invests in ambitious, imaginative, and catalytic work that showcases the region’s cultural vitality and enhances public life, and engages in an exchange of ideas concerning artistic and interpretive practice with a broad network of cultural practitioners and leaders.

Tramando: Collective Making, Continued Traditions forms part of Taller’s yearlong initiative WE WILL NOT HIDE, which reclaims the radical legacy of the 1976 Sin Colonias March to affirm everyone’s right to visibility, respect, and self-determination. Through exhibitions, talks, and community programs, the series uplifts voices often marginalized in national commemorations, emphasizing inclusion, critique, and transformation as Philadelphia and the nation observe the 250th anniversary.
